A team of principals with decades of experience in both managing and owning large apartment projects leads ICG. These talented individuals with unique skill sets help ICG achieve excellence in all aspects of the business. They also ensure that investors’ interests are at the forefront of every business decision.
Mick Halpin
One of the three founding principals of HSC, Mick Halpin is now a co-managing member of ICG. He is experienced in all aspects of multifamily property management, acquisition and rehabilitation and is responsible for all of the firm’s acquisition activities. Mick was previously employed as an asset manager for a national real estate company in Seattle. Before entering the property management field, he was a loan officer for a regional bank in its real estate division. Mick graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in business administration.
Michael Christian
One of the three founding principals of HSC, Mike Christian is an expert in operational management systems and procedures. He is now a co-managing member of ICG. Mike is responsible for the firm’s asset management activities for ICG’s investment portfolio. Previously Mike was an asset manager with a national real estate company in Seattle and gained experience in sales management with a Fortune 500 company. He graduated from Washington State University with a degree in finance.
Walter H. Smith
Walt was one of the three founding members of HSC, serving as its president from 2001 until 2008, as well as a principal of ICG. Walt is currently serving as CEO for Riverstone Residential Group, overseeing approximately 170,000 managed units. Walt is a member of the Institute of Real Estate Management and the Washington Chapter of the National Apartment Association. He graduated from Montana State University with a degree in communications.
Pål Ottesen
Pal is a principal in ICG and the Chief Administrative Officer of Riverstone Residential. Prior to joining Riverstone, Pål was a principal of HSC and has been in the real estate industry since 1991. Since Riverstone acquired HSC in 2008, Pål has served as the chief operating officer. He graduated cum laude from Washington State University in business administration.
Stephen F. Davis
Steve Davis is a principal in ICG and also oversees operations in Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico for Riverstone Residential Group. The region consists of roughly 26,000 apartment homes and 160 communities. Prior to joining Riverstone, Steve was a principal of HSC and has been in the real estate industry since 1996. He also spent seven years with Princess Tours/Cruises. Steve graduated from the University of Washington and is a licensed broker in Oregon and Montana.
Ward Murphy
Since 2002, Ward has served as the director of investor relations, overseeing ICG’s effort in raising capital for acquisitions and interacting with investors. He previously spent 10 years at Seattle-Northwest Securities, a regional investment bank, most recently as investment banker and earlier as vice president, institution sales, placing corporate and municipal bonds with institutional investors. He also spent several years at Honeywell’s commercial buildings group in Chicago. Ward graduated with a degree in English from Tulane University in New Orleans.
James M. McCullough, III
Jim McCollough is ICG’s financial analyst and has been with the firm for more than 15 years. He was initially hired as an accountant in 1995. Jim specializes in acquisition analysis and underwriting, asset and market analysis, and forecasting and loan underwriting. He holds degrees in both finance and accounting from Central Washington University.
Johnathan Makus
Johnathan Makus is an acquisition manager, currently researching markets to source, underwrite and negotiate ICG’s investment opportunities. He coordinates due diligence and oversight of third-party contractors, and he works with ICG’s principals on the acquisition and disposition of assets. Before joining ICG in 2006, Johnathan worked as a real estate broker. He has a degree in business administration and international business from Johnson & Wales University in Denver.
